Why an electric stove is shocking and how to fix it

Check grounding

Even at the design stage of the electric stove, everything is done in such a way as to prevent any possible leakage of current from its components to the case. Serves for this grounding. However, a gap can still appear due to the fact that although everything inside the plate is working, outside grounding may be absent altogether.

The bottom line is that any normal modern outlet has three contacts: “phase”, “zero” and “earth”. But what if there is a ground contact, but in fact the ground connection is not connected to it, or it was connected earlier, but then for some reason it disappeared?

Grounding could cease to fulfill its function for various reasons: oxidation of the terminals of the ground wire, overheating factor, excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation, the destructive effect of moisture, etc. One way or another, it is necessary to check the integrity of the ground loop and find out if the power supply is grounded?

First, using a multimeter in voltmeter mode, or using an indicator screwdriver, find the phase and zero outputs of the outlet. Then measure the resistance between the socket zero and the ground terminal. Resistance should not be significant.

Also, the phase may appear on the plate body even if the grounding in the socket is working properly, but the plug terminal does not contact the socket grounding terminal. Check this. Finally, it will be necessary to ring the plate body and the ground terminal on the plug - the resistance should be practically zero. If a problem is identified at this stage, an electrician will be able to solve it.


Check insulation integrity

A fault in the insulation can also cause a phase to appear on the plate body. Insulation can be violated both at the contact points and on the connecting wires.The integrity of the contacts is checked with a multimeter with the plate turned off, and an indicator screwdriver is suitable for locating the phase leakage on the case and on the plate nodes. Remember that you can’t touch the included plate during operation with the indicator screwdriver with your bare hands!

Having identified the phase leakage point, then it will be easy to find the part of the plate inside which the phase breaks through, which means that this part needs to be repaired or replaced.
