How does an electric scooter work?

Recently, in parks and on the streets of our cities, especially in the dry and warm season, you can notice more and more electric scooters. Over the past few years, they have managed to turn from toys into a full-fledged means of individual transportation akin to a once-uncontested bicycle.

On an electric scooter, you can tirelessly maneuver along the sidewalk or even among cars in a traffic jam. It is always convenient to ride a scooter through the square, get to work on the shortest path, and there will be no problems finding a parking place, as is the case with scooters. Let's talk about the device of an electric scooter, pay attention to the principle of its operation.

Just note that the received idea of the general structure of the electric scooter does not guarantee that you will become a specialist in the service of this vehicle. Repair in any case is best entrusted to professionals. Different models differ in their own design features, which only specially trained experienced craftsmen know about.

To repair electric scooters, there are specialized service centers that you will need to contact if necessary. So the repair will cost less trouble and without extra costs.

Disassembled electric scooter

Like any scooter, an electric scooter always has a frame, a sole, handles and wheels. But only an electric scooter is installed under the deck battery. It is the battery that accounts for most of the weight of the vehicle. The engine is certainly present here, but it will be discussed later, because the engines of electric scooters are fundamentally different.

Electric scooter

In general, there are two types of electric scooters, the differences between which are precisely in the types of their motors: chain scooters and scooters with a motor wheel. Other parts can optionally be present, such as an on-board computer, a seat, a trunk and other bells and whistles, designed to increase comfort when moving.

Chain scooter - a classic electric scooter. In it, the torque from the engine to the wheel is transmitted through a chain transmission, just as it is implemented in a bicycle, scooter, motorcycle.

Chain scooter

Scooters with a motor wheel are more reliable and simple, but scooters with a chain are more powerful. A belt may be pulled in place of a chain, but these are particulars that are less reliable than chain models.

It is chain scooters that have sufficient power to ride in almost any road surface conditions. On a chain scooter, you can confidently move around the city every day, and, if necessary, off-road.

In the design of the chain scooter, not far from the axis, the motor and gearbox are located, only due to them the movement of transport is carried out. The circuit transmits torque to the front wheel, while the supply voltage is supplied to the motor through the wires. For safety reasons, the engine and gearbox are enclosed in a special airtight box.

A motor-wheel is a more modern solution for an electric scooter, scooters with a motor-wheel belong to the middle class. Here the engine is installed directly in one of the wheels, or in both wheels it is installed on the engine. Electric scooters with a motor wheel have advantages over chain. Such a scooter is easier to maintain, it is known in advance that there will be no problems with the chain.

Motor wheel

The engine can be easily replaced if necessary. The view of the scooter with the motor wheel is more aesthetic, the weight of the vehicle is less, but there is also a minus - a maximum power of 500 watts. You can’t ride off-road anymore, as there simply isn’t enough motor power. But for everyday driving around the city such a scooter is ideal.

Depending on the scooter model, engine power and battery capacity, it can travel distances of 30 to 50 km.
